Men’s Skin Care Tips: It Just Makes Sense

June 13, 2018

We’re in a world now where skin care for men is a subject for Men’s Fitness, and not just GQ. For more and more men, taking care of their skin is part of their fitness routine, and not a vanity or indulgence.

What makes a man attractive evolved from generations of selecting the best mate. Health, above all, was attractive and remains so to this day. It’s hard to look healthy when the largest and most visible organ of the body is not looking well. That’s the skin, and it carries a lot of weight in the case for being attracted to you.

A Clean Beginning

In our fathers’ generations, athletes were obsessed with hygiene. Imagine surviving in a world before penicillin, and the 20th Century athlete’s obsession with clean, white under-gear for sports explains itself. That cleanliness extended to face, skin, and hair, and it was the look that made Gary Cooper, William Holden, Burt Lancaster, and that bunch the idols women never outgrew. Fast forward to Johnny Depp, and you see a whole generation of stars who don’t hesitate to take care of their skin.

Great-looking skin begins with what you wash your skin with, which is why we recommend Revision Brightening Facial Wash, a rejuvenating cleanser that will give you brighter, smoother skin. This best-selling cleanser is loaded with alpha and beta hydroxy acids and brightening botanicals to remove the day’s impurities, leaving skin clean and hydrated.

Experts say that even men – maybe especially men – need the exfoliating power of a good scrub. Not too harsh, but enough to clear away the dead skin that naturally accumulates every day. Our favorite is Vivite, which is an innovative exfoliating cleanser that allows you to scrub away that dull, top layer of skin. You’ll enjoy fresher, younger-looking skin, thanks to its 15% glycolic compound and the exfoliating microbeads that thoroughly dissolve accumulated dead skin cells. It’s great when you want heavy exfoliation, especially on the body.

Shaving Without Overdoing

Shaving itself is often overdone, when it’s done at all. The style of stubble and the fad for beards aside, shaving is an area that can work for or against your skin’s well-being, depending on how you do it.

Multi-blade razors have given manufacturers a profitable means of planned obsolescence in their shaving instruments, but they can cause bumps and ingrown hairs because they pull whiskers up and cut them below the skin’s surface. A more moderate, straightforward, and high-quality instrument is preferred for good skin care.

ColoreScience offers a one-two shaving punch that will take your shave to the next level. The Protect Post Shave Shield is an invisible skin protector with the most-effective SPF 20 sunscreen available. Packed full of powerful anti-oxidants and rice peptides, it leaves your skin feeling soothed and protected. This aftershave, which is formulated with oat beta to moisturize, improves skin texture and protects you from sun damage – all in one easy product.

ColoreScience’s Soothe Post Shave Gel cools and restores the look of your skin after shaving. This unique blend of natural hydrators contains hyaluronic acid to reduce dryness and menthol to cool and refresh. Sandalwood and tea tree oil soothe skin while preventing razor burn, ingrown hairs, and blemishes.

Moisturizing is Manly

Using a basic moisturizer after shaving and showering is a habit many men are adopting. Though some skin types may have shown the need all along, even naturally oily skin eventually gets flaky without a lotion or moisturizer. It’s a simple step to take and, honest, it’s not just for sis anymore.

One of the best moisturizers for men is Revision’s Multi-Protection Broad-Spectrum SPF 50. This daily anti-aging moisturizer is great for all skin types, is oil free, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, provides broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection, and contains a strong blend of antioxidants.

Sun Screen is Basic

Any escalation of skin care for a man should begin with getting the habit of sun screen. SPF 30 is good. SPF 50 is better. Skin cancer is a killer, and there is no doubt that sun exposure is a lifelong risk. The sooner you start protecting yourself, the better your chances are of avoiding the all-too-common basal cell carcinoma or deadly melanoma.

If you are not using one of the above products that already provide SPF protection, then consider adding a sunscreen to your daily regimen. And don’t leave it to your own eyes only to look out for skin cancer. A semi-annual once-over from a skilled board-certified dermatologist is recommended, especially here in the sunny South.
