What causes Nail Fungus Infection?
Fungal organisms – as well as some yeasts and molds – cause the infection. But there are several factors that increase the risk and growth of the infection.
- Age: Older individuals are at higher risk of nail fungus due to diminished blood flow and compromised immune systems.
- Damp feet: Warm, moist conditions, like those in sweaty socks and shoes are conducive to fungal growth.
- Public Exposure: Walking barefoot in moist communal places like gyms, pools, and showers increase the likelihood of contracting a fungus.
- Circulatory Disorders & Diabetes: These conditions reduce blood flow to the feet and compromise the immune system, increasing the chance of infection.
- Sharing Items: Sharing contaminated personal items like nail clippers, footwear, socks, or towels can elevate the risk of acquiring nail fungus.
