Double Chin? Not Anymore with this Simple Injection

March 20, 2019

As we get older, it becomes increasingly difficult to rid our bodies of unwanted fat. In the case of the dreaded double-chin, it can be even more difficult, as submental fat is not easily remedied through diet and exercise alone. Thankfully, Kybella offers a solution for not only reducing the appearance of under-chin fullness, but also permanently ridding our bodies of these troublesome fat cells.

What is Submental Fat?

The submental area is defined as the triangular piece of tissue that connects the bottom of the chin to the front of the neck. Because of its positioning underneath the chin and its near-constant movement, this area is easily susceptible to skin wrinkling and fat deposits as we age. Because submental fullness is largely caused by aging and genetics, and can have little to do with weight gain, it has historically been a difficult issue to treat. Traditionally, the only options for ridding our bodies of this excess fat has been through painful surgical procedures that leave the skin scarred and can generate unpredictable results.

Through Kybella, however, patients can receive unbelievable results without the scarring, expense, and downtime associated with more invasive procedures. Kybella – the only drug approved by the FDA to treat submental fat – is an injectable procedure that works by introducing deoxycholic acid to targeted areas of the chin. (Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule found in the human body and aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat cells.)

By delivering a series of injections under the chin, Kybella destroys fat cells and naturally – and permanently – flushes them from the body. Once fat cells are destroyed, new fat cannot be accumulated. This makes Kybella a truly remarkable treatment, as further injections are not necessary beyond the initial series of injections, and because results last despite subsequent weight gain.

The Skinny on Kybella

Kybella is performed in a series of treatments. The total number of treatments is dependent on the individual needs of each patient. Each injection process takes a total of 15 to 20 minutes and is performed at one-month intervals – never exceeding a maximum of six total treatments.

Following treatment, most patients will experience slight swelling, bruising, or under-chin numbness. These side effects often last only a short period of time and subside on their own without any concern.

Before your Kybella treatment, it is important to discuss with your board-certified dermatologist any pre-existing medical conditions and previous cosmetic or surgical procedures.
