For
years, the disfiguring and often painful skin condition known as
psoriasis has frustrated dermatologists and patients alike.
Its lesions often refuse to respond to an array of treatments,
or they disappear only to recur again in a few days.
Fortunately for psoriasis sufferers, that is changing.
We are very pleased to offer our patients the latest technology
available in their fight against psoriasis.
For the first
time in their lives, psoriasis sufferers have real hope for
relief from sometimes painful skin lesions, thanks to a
revolutionary new laser treatment called the XTRAC excimer
laser.
Dermatology Consultants, P.C. recently installed an XTRAC™
excimer laser system for the treatment of psoriasis.
Psoriasis is a chronic, recurring skin condition with no known
cure.
According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, this skin
condition affects an estimated 7 million Americans. It is the
second most common skin disorder in the United States. The scaly
skin plaques caused by psoriasis can cause discomfort,
disfigurement and embarrassment. Social withdrawal and even
depression are not uncommon among psoriasis sufferers.
Developed by PhotoMedex of Radnor, Pa., the XTRAC system
is the first FDA market-approved laser treatment for
psoriasis. Until now, those afflicted with the condition
have had to rely on rigorous daily skin care treatments using
creams and ointments that are often ineffective. Or they have
had to undergo a series of costly and lengthy phototherapy
sessions.
Using a carefully focused beam of light delivered through a
sophisticated fiber-optic device, the XTRAC laser can help treat
unsightly psoriatic skin lesions quickly and effectively
without exposing healthy skin to harmful ultraviolet rays.
Individuals with psoriasis can often obtain relief in just
four to ten brief treatment sessions. Most treatment
sessions last only a few minutes, and relief can often last for
several months.
We are
pleased to inform you that based on the growing number of
clinical studies published in medical journals demonstrating the
effectiveness of the XTRAC®
Laser in treating psoriasis, many insurance companies are now
approving this therapy for patients. As is customary, patients
are responsible for any deductible and co-pay that is required
by their insurance carrier.
Patients will need to schedule an appointment with one of our
physicians or physician extenders to make sure they are
candidates for the XTRAC laser treatment.
