Tips for Maintaining Proper Winter Skin Care

January 3, 2018

During the months of June, July, and August, we are constantly inundated with reminders of the importance of sunscreen and yearly skin exams. We are told to avoid certain activities and limit the amount of time we spend in places baked by perpetual sun exposure. This, certainly, is valid advice – and annual skin exams are essential and save countless lives every year.

But what about winter? Why don’t we hear the same advice during the holiday season that we hear at the start of the summer break?

The Importance of Year-Round Sun Protection

Although we tend to spend less time outdoors during the winter, the Georgia sun is a constant presence. In fact, by neglecting to apply daily sunscreen during the colder months, our skin is often more susceptible to harmful radiation than it is during the spring and summer.

Ultraviolet radiation is a powerful force. Using sunscreens with SPF ratings of 30 or higher are highly effective, as they contain protecting minerals and chemicals that reflect and negate harmful radiation. Unfortunately, even when we’re indoors, we are not provided the same level of protection from our surroundings.

Window and Cloud Cover is Not Enough

The low light of winter and more frequent cloud cover can be a bit misleading. Although UV radiation is lowest under cloudy skies, cloud cover is not enough to block its harmful effects. For instance, UVB rays (the rays largely responsible for causing superficial damage to the skin, such as sunburn) are more heavily influenced by cloud cover than UVA rays. This results in a lessened chance for sunburns on cloudy days. However, UVA rays penetrate much deeper, and prolonged exposure to these rays result in changes to the DNA, skin cancer, and premature aging.

This applies to windows as well. Many people tend to think that when they are driving or sitting at home in front of a living room window, they are protected from the damaging effects of the sun. However, harmful radiation passes easily through glass to penetrate deep within the skin. As we don’t experience sun burning when behind windows, we don’t see these effects; but their long-term ramifications can be devastating.

It is important, then, that sunscreen be applied daily regardless of time of year or weather conditions. Using an effective mineral sunscreen is best, as these work well under makeup and are generally more effective than chemical alternatives.

Don’t Forget to Moisturize

Although applying sunscreen is the best way to protect the skin from cancer and premature aging, it is also important to maintain proper skin moisture during the winter. Using products that help retain natural moisture and protect the barrier level are great for minimizing acne, redness, irritation, and cracking skin.
